Description
Here is a labor intensive swing fly with a lot of complex flash, and great movement! By combining Chocklett’s Game Changer (multiple articulated shanks tapered in size) with Intruder style composite loops, you get a fun pattern that has potential to catch a lot of different species. Using primarily synthetic materials in composite loops it is possible to keep weight and water absorption fairly low, while keeping a large profile. Color combinations can be made as simple or complex as you would like by adding different flash elements to the loops.
Im currently offering 4 colors, but please let me know if you have a specific combination you would like to see. Typically I pick one main ice dub color that builds the base of all the loops. I then pick a color (or colors) for the ostrich used on the tail and head. This color typically matches or compliments the palmer chenille that fills the space between loops. Then, to build the loops I pick an accent color of ice dub and a good complimentary color of polar flash. Ill list the recipes below for examples if you want custom colors.
Currently I am tying these at about 4″ long, which should be a good size for bass, steelhead, and salmon. I am working on doing a smaller version for low water conditions and trout.
Recipes:
All colors use the following shank/hook configuration
- OPST trailer hook, size 2
- body is made of 2 10mm shanks and 2 15mm shanks
- Head is made on a small OPST Steelhead shank.
Tails are tied on the first 10mm shank. They consist of a few wraps of cull length chenille, a small composite loop, and finally an over wing of ostrich slightly longer than the chenille.
The remaining body pieces start with chenille wrapped up just far enough up the shank to leave room for a loop at the head of each piece. I then trim the chenille so that it is just long enough to cover the gap between shanks. Then a loop is created. I try to make the materials long enough to cover half of the previous loop, creating a taper getting larger each time.
Once the body shanks are done I use some wire bite to attach them to the OPST Steelhead shank. This will be the head and is tied like a traditional two station intruder. After a few wraps of chenille at the base I create another loop like the rest of them. Then some more chenille up to the head. Everything always tapering larger. The final loop uses a dubbing bump to add some lift along with some ostrich, and longer pieces of flash.
Finally, an ostrich over wing and some Jungle Coc eyes to finish it off.
Here is a tutorial video on how to tie it, followed by the different color recipes.
